How is Keenious different from other AI tools?
Students can ask an AI tool a question and get an answer with references, without opening a single article.
Libraries see it in their figures. Article downloads are falling, and the drop is larger at libraries that have licensed AI tools. This is called zero-click research.
The difference is who chooses the research and who reads it.

The student chooses
Keenious runs a search the student can see, change and run again, and shows the results as a map of research areas and a list. The papers they open shape the next search, so two students with a similar question end up with different papers. Everything also works without the AI.

The student reads
The AI explains terms and passages and points to the areas and the result list. It does not write long, ready-to-submit drafts. Asked for a finished report, it replies: "I cannot write a report or synthesize sources into a finished draft for you, but I can help you explore the literature and find relevant research to build your own report."

The library is the way in
Every result is a publication. It opens through your link resolver, with a button carrying your institution's name, or through an open access copy. The reading goes through your collection.
Why it is built this way
In early 2023 we asked 52 librarians around the world about large language models in academia. They saw automated writing for students as the most concerning use, and tools for learning and exploring a topic as a good one. We built Keenious on that, and waited until August 2025 to launch its generative features.

What you set up
Your library inside Keenious
Keenious carries your library's settings, so students meet your library inside it: your welcome message, a button to your copy of each paper, your citation message and your rules for the AI.
Every student and staff member gets Keenious Plus: unlimited conversations, export of whole result lists to Zotero and EndNote, and file uploads up to 20 MB, in the web app and the add-ins for Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
Your institution sets the terms around the AI: the message students confirm before they cite, the delay on the Cite button, and rules for the AI. If your university has guidelines for AI, the citation message can point students to them.

What students search
Keenious searches 180M+ publications from a curated version of OpenAlex, an open catalogue of paid and open access research. Keenious links to where each paper can be read. Curation removes digitised archives, meeting abstracts, retracted works and other non-scholarly content. Students can search in more than 100 languages.
Open access status comes from OpenAlex, which includes Unpaywall. Peer review status comes from the Norwegian Scientific Index, curated by national disciplinary boards. Venues outside it stay in the catalogue, and a record can carry the wrong label. Curation in detail

How it is done
Rollout
Setup takes days, with no data migration and no local installation. Keenious needs three things from you: your email domains, your campus IP ranges and your link resolver, such as LibKey, Primo or EDS.
Students sign in on campus by IP range, or with their email. SAML single sign-on and installing the Word add-in for everyone are optional, and your IT team can add them at any time.

Security, privacy and accessibility
Keenious is hosted in the EU, in Ireland, Belgium, France and Germany. Your institution owns its data, and Keenious processes it on your behalf. Keenious does not train on user data.
